Position Goal: To support the writing efforts of the physicians and allied health-care professionals associated with The Hughston Clinic and Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Edits, organizes, or writes scientific manuscripts, abstracts, articles, video scripts, slide presentations, and promotional material for authors submitting to medical journals and textbooks, scientific meeting presentations, and to publications for the general public.
  • Coordinates with physicians and involved department heads regarding requirements and questions relative to their paper or project and submits the material for publication.
  • Responsible for organizing papers or projects into standard format for congruity and clarity.
  • Responsible for altering style to meet requirements of different medical journals and publishers.
  • Responsible for coordinating efforts of editor and author throughout publication process from submission to publication.
  • Responsible for compiling tables or reorganizing existing ones; searching medical records to verify accuracy of data.
  • Responsible for working with medical illustrator to determine placement and accuracy of figures and composing legends to accompany them.
  • Responsible for proofreading all material to ensure accuracy.
  • Responsible for editing and approving final content of all newsletters produced by the Medical Writing Department and Medical Illustration Department

Experience: Senior level requires 3-5 years experience in editing and writing. Must possess sound knowledge of medical terminology (orthopaedics preferred). Must have basic knowledge of statistics.
Education: Bachelors degree in English, science, or journalism from accredited institution. Work toward core curriculum certification by American Medical Writers Association or ELS (Editor in Life Sciences) certification preferred.
Special Qualifications: Must be able to research independently. Must be able to work one-on-one with physicians (language skills; attitude, and appropriate dress). Must be able to work overtime, when necessary, and be able to attend out-of-town meetings and conferences.
